The quartz sleeve on a UV system will require periodic cleaning. At a minimum, the quartz sleeve should be cleaned on an annual basis. Depending on water quality, the quartz sleeve may require more frequent cleaning.
Note: The use of cotton gloves is recommended.
Follow the steps below to clean a quartz sleeve:
- If a bypass assembly is installed, shut the inlet valve off to prevent water flow through the system. Otherwise, turn off main water inlet valve (and/or turn off the water pump).
- Disconnect power cord of UV system from electrical outlet.
- Release water pressure by opening a downstream faucet and then close the outlet shut-off valve (if any). If there is no outlet shut-off valve, some water will drain from the system.
- Unscrew the ground screw from the UV chamber.
- Remove the lamp connector(s) from the reactor by pushing the lamp connector in and turning it ¼ turn counterclockwise. Disconnect the lamp connector(s) from the lamp(s).
CAUTION: the lamp(s) may be hot!
- Remove the lamp, only touching the ceramic ends.
- Unscrew the gland nuts from the UV chamber on both ends.
- Remove the O-ring(s) on the side opposite from the lamp connection.
- Remove the quartz sleeve(s) from the chamber, ensuring that no water enters the quartz sleeve(s).
- Using a soft, lint-free cloth, wipe the sleeve down using a scale cleaner (i.e. CLR® or LIME-A-WAY®). careful not to get any moisture or liquids inside of the sleeve.
- Dry the sleeve with a different cloth.
Once the cleaning is complete, the UV system will need to be reassembled following the steps below:
- Using cotton gloves, carefully remove new quarts sleeve(s) from the packaging.
- Carefully slide the sleeve(s) into the reactor ensuring that the sleeve(s) is/are centered. An equal amount of quartz sleeve should be seen on either side of the chamber.
- Slide the new O-rings onto the sleeve(s) on either side until they are butted up against the reactor.
- Hand-tighten the gland nuts over the quartz sleeve(s) onto either end of the chamber. Ensure the open-ended gland nut(s) is/are installed on the side of the chamber with the ground lug. A firm force may be required to fully tighten the gland nuts but DO NOT USE TOOLS.
- Insert the springs back into the sleeve(s), 2 per sleeve.
- Check for any possible leaks by slowly turning on the water.
- Reinstall the lamp(s) and connect the lamp connector(s).
- Affix the ground wire to the ground lug.
